Game Review

Super Tetris is, as the name says, a tetris game. But not just an ordinary tetris game - it takes the game much further than it was originally planned to go. The new game features add a dimension to the age-old puzzler that changes the entire way of playing the game. It isn't the same game now than it was on your precious old black, gray and white gameboy, and it will never be the same again.

We've all seen crappy tetris games - even pretty good ones - but most of them end there - they're just tetris clones. Super tetris is tetris... With bombs. Yeah, you heard me right, tetris with bombs. Every time you make a line, you get 2 bombs with which you can blast away pesky blocks, maxing at 8 bombs at a 4-liner. The goal of the game isn't to make as many lines as you can - it's to clear the level and have as little blocks left as possible - so you get a bigger score.

There's also lots of special blocks, like blocks that explode when you make a line with them in it - there's also a block that removes one line if you bomb it. There's also blocks that give you a 4-block long tetris shape, a block that gives you 5 seconds extra time for the level, a block that turns your next shape into that same shape, but made of bombs (again with the bombs!).

The graphics are pretty standard early 90's VGA fare - but the addition of the moscow circus (pictures of it in the level backgrounds) adds a nice atmosphere to the game. The sounds are pretty much missable - the music is lackluster and I can't imagine anyone missing any sound from this game. So playing without sound is easy enough, eliminating the need of DOSbox (because disabling sound in the main menu will make the game playable on any WinXP computer).

Super Tetris is a good game. It's a very good tetris clone - and in my not so humble opinion, surpasses the original by miles. Go play it. If you don't like it, I'll give you your money back. Heh.
