Game Review

Volfied is a game I used to play on my 286 Commodore PCIII-45. That was back when I was like, 12 or 13 - and it was a riot. I used to play nights away trying to finish this game. Even on easy, I've never managed - but then again, I'm mostly an adventure and roleplaying gamer, so my reflexes are like jello on the titanic - far from steady. But the game held out fairly well, and that's what I'm here to talk about.

The game is basically a Qix clone - you know, the game where you had to cut away parts of the playing field? I don't know Qix myself, but I've heard about the familiarity between the two, so I thought I'd mention it. *scratches behind head* Shall I just limit myself to what I do know? Okay! Good! Volfied is a game where you... have... ehrr.. to cut away parts of the playing field. Yeah. And there are enemies in the form of roaming monsters, and there are powerups in the form of blocks you have to cut away.

The goal of the game is, obviously, to win. But beside that, you finish a playing field by cutting away 80% or more of it. You can also win a stage by shooting the boss monster with the red+yellow star powerup, but don't put all your hope on that one, it is a rare one indeed. There are powerups that stop your shield from depleting, and... Wait, did I tell you about that yet? You've got a shield, so you're safe when you're not actually cutting anything away (when you're on the yellow outlines). When you start to cut away at the field, your shield is deactivated and you're open to attacks from monsters.

The other powerups equip your little ship with lasers, or the boss frisbee attack thing, or they make you go faster. Or you just get points. The more you cut away, the higher your bonus, and the higher the chance that you'll get extra ships. Which is basically just extra lives, but eh.

The trick of the game is to cut away as much of the field as you can without dying. Makes sense, no? My personal record on level 1 is 99.7%, but after that things get so hectic that I usually hover somewhere around 90-95% on the first 5 levels following the first, and around 85% after that. And of course, I go game over at the before-last level. Goddamnit.

Think you can take volfied? I bet you do! Go download it and play it. There's a reason this game was ported to so many systems - as it's a classic you can't do without!
