I came across this game as a budget title one day. I, as a science fiction fan, had of course heard a lot of raving enthusiasts telling me why I should read Dune and why I was an ass for not having done that already. I was about, what, 14? I mean, I was young. I didn't have the mental stamina to stand more than 50 pages of Herbertarian wonkies (this is what I've called his insane method of writing I love so dearly now, but couldn't stand back then), so when I saw this game in stores for about 10 euro, I thought to myself; this'll be a nice introduction to Dune, even if it sucks. How wrong I was..
Not that it wasn't a perfect introduction to Dune or something, but what I was wrong about was that it might have sucked. To be quite honest, this game captivated me and made me yearn for more Dune. I sought that in books, movies, mini series (which suck) and newer games (dune 2 & 2000 are okay, emperor is so-so, and that stupid-ass Dune action adventure game based on the mini-series sucks sandworm ASS). But let's talk about this specific game, shall we?
The game doesn't follow the original story, but has enough likeness to it to be seen as an alternate interpretation of what happened. The major difference is what happens. The story progresses nicely - with enough room in between to keep you guessing, and enough story development to keep you informed. The pacing is sublime. The way the characters have been portrayed also works mighty swell - and this is the first game ever to make me feel along with my character's feelings of love. I was glad he got together with Chani. He deserved her and she deserved him. I was so pissed when that bitch Harah started.. eehr... Anyway, let's go onto the cosmetics ;)
I have the CD-ROM version of the game, which has enhanced music, pretty damn good speech and cutscene animations, but it's not much prettier than the disk version. Basically all that's improved lots is the music and the addition of voices, thazzal. The game looks pretty, with interesting character designs and funky flying animations. Gotta see em to appreciate em ;) The music is extremely well-done, and is captivating and atmospheric. This game has one of the best atmospheres I've ever encountered in a game of this type.
The game itself plays as a weird mixture of adventure on one hand, and strategy on the other. The game starts out as an adventure, basically, and you venture out into the big bad world known as Dune, and get to know the people who live there - both the Fremen, who are cool, and the Harkonnen, who aren't cool. Of course there's the strategic element of making the Fremen work for you, to mine spice, which you must hand over to the Padishah Emperor Shaddam the 4th every 3-6 days, but otherwise it isn't TOO strategic yet. Then, when you start making deals with the Fremen and they start following you, all kinds of sietches you had secured for yourself gets captured by Harkonnen forces and the game turns strategy. Like, weird strategy. You ge these troops, and you can station, like, 9 or so at every city. 9 in total, that is, so 5 of yours + 4 harkonnen means the city is full, and you're gonna have to hope that you're going to win. There are 3 types of weapons - krys, laser weapons and atomics, ranging from good to GOODER and GOODSTEST EVAH. So equip them, send em out and *hope*. Quite realistic ;)
I dunno - it's hard to explain, but you'll talk to people, get to meet all kinds of assholes and niceholes, and maybe even a lady or two ;) You get to do the 'search a to get b' type quests and you can kick harkonnen booty around a sandy planet full of stupid people who refuse to use the gazillions of litres of water for their own good. Oh, and you can grow pla... Eehr, heh, just play it :D *runs away*
